I WANT Candy
The Sweet Stuff in American Art

While isolated images of candy and other sweets appear in American art before the 19th century, standarized factory production and candy's ubiquitous presence in mass marketing resulted in sweets frequently being used as subject matter for American artists in the second half of the 20th century.
While much of the art in I WANT Candy is beautifully “sugar coated” to the eye, many of the works are confrontational and encourage a re-examination of traditional values and assumptions underlying American life. In more ways than one, this exhibition truly exemplifies the sweet stuff in American art.
