Africana Woman
Her Story Through Time

In her book Africana Woman: Her Story Through Time , Dr. Cynthia Jacobs Carter tells the story of African American women with intricate details and anecdotes. Throughout the book, she emphasizes the strength of African American women in terms of their unyielding positive nature and inherent desire to overcome adversity. From Egyptian queens and pharaohs to contemporary leaders who continue to forge the way for future generations, Carter conveys the power of the women who have gone before us.
This exhibition is based upon Dr. Carter's book and follows the chronological development of the African woman through the modern era. Although it will utilize traditional wares including costumes, jewelry, and baskets, these will be supplemented by the work of visual and performance artists from the turn of the century to present day including Elizabeth Catlett, Ellen Gallagher, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, Augusta Savage, Lorna Simpson, Synthia Saint-James, Kara Walker, and Carrie Mae Weems among many others. This helps to create a bridge between contemporary artists and the traditional ideas and artifacts that influence them.
