A Perfect Measure
The Golden Mean in Contemporary Art

Clive d'Oliveira

For the last two millennia, the Golden Mean has graced artists’ canvases, architectural structures, and the pages of scholarly journals. It is found when a line is divided into two unequal parts so that the shorter part relates in length to the longer as the longer relates to the whole. It provides a design element that unifies an entire composition which is rendered in two or three dimensions. A sought-after phenomenon by mathematicians, scientists, and artists alike, this ratio is found in both the natural and man-made worlds.

The artists that comprise A Perfect Measure: The Golden Mean in Contemporary Art use the proportion as both a design tool and a design element. Some explore it as a means to begin the composition, while others feature it as both the end and the mean in their art. With the 21st Century opening the door to an amalgamation of science and art, this exhibition helps to bridge the gap between those two disciplines and highlight the manner in which they intertwine.
