A Gathering of Eagles
Artists of the Cornish Colony

cornish

The Cornish Colony's namesake is the town of Cornish, New Hampshire, although the artistic ties extended to the neighboring towns of Plainfield, N.H. and Windsor, Vermont. The arrival of American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens to the area in 1885 generally signals the beginning of the colony. Following in the footsteps of Saint-Gaudens, many of his friends came to Cornish including Thomas and Maria Dewing, Henry Oliver Walker, Charles Piat, and Stephen and Maxfield Parrish. With its bucolic scenery and creative atmosphere, the colony attracted a wide array of illustrious figures. Non-artist residents included the presidential Wilson family, actress Ethel Barrymore, judge Learned Hand, and the dancer Isadora Duncan. Together the inhabitants formed a countryside paradise by building grand masions surrounded by exquiste gardens on the New Hampshire side, and going across the river to preform buisness.

The concept that beauty, percision, and excellence must be pursued in the arts united the Cornish Colony members. The Cornish Colony is indeed part of our treasured American heritage, and the influence of this extraordinary group of luminaries extended far beyond the hallowed hills of Cornish. This ambitious exhibit will highlight works that are a source of pride and delight throughout the United States and abroad.
