Japanese Wedding Dress

Something Borrowed, Something New
A World of Bridal Fashion

An exhibition certain to please the young and old alike, the romantic, the adventurous, and the academic: Something Borrowed, Something New features thirty-five traditional wedding ensembles from a variety of cultures spanning five continents. While in America the white wedding dress has become the traditional standard, in many cultures traditional wedding attire is characterized by rich colors, elaborate accessories and head dresses, and the application of intricate make-up. For example, many Eastern countries that share a Confucian tradition agree on red as the appropriate color for wedding attire, as it symbolizes happiness and prosperity. Even in the West, the current trend of while wedding dresses only became popular after Queen Victoria donned a white lace dress for her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840, thus starting a trend that would last more than a century and a half; prior to that, most brides would wear dresses with fashionable silhouettes in a variety of colors, including pastes, gold, and even black.
